A new study is investigating the effectiveness of a popular anti-impotence drug for patients suffering from depression.
An earlier study was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that sildenafil (a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor) significantly reduced depression symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
The researchers found that the drug reduced the number of patients who had depression symptoms by 50 percent. This is the same effect the study showed for sildenafil.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), was funded by Eli Lilly. However, researchers at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon are studying sildenafil as a drug to treat depression.
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, and is used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension.
Researchers at the University of Bristol in United Kingdom, who are conducting the study, used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of sildenafil for the treatment of depression. The study found that 50 percent of patients treated with sildenafil had an improvement in depression symptoms with no significant difference between treatment and placebo. The study did not find a difference between the two groups in terms of side effects.
The study is the latest in a series of large studies that are ongoing, including one in the United States, another in Europe and a third in Japan. The current study is a preliminary, small, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sildenafil in patients with MDD. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that works by increasing the flow of blood to the penis to help you get and maintain an erection.
It is believed that the drug helps to relieve symptoms of depression, and that sildenafil works by improving the ability of a man to get and keep an erection. It is not known if sildenafil will treat depression, but researchers believe that it will be the only drug that will help.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company, a pharmaceutical company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Lilly also has an affiliate program at the National Institutes of Health.
“The drug we have been testing for years is a very safe and effective treatment for depression,” said Michael Segal, senior clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Bristol.
WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration today approved a temporary temporary temporary suspension of the prescription drug Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, for a patient who has been prescribed the drug since 1998.
The suspension is temporary because the drug was approved more than half a year ago, but is not expected to be approved until September, a decision that has been delayed because the FDA has not provided the final answer.
Viagra is a prescription medicine for men with erectile dysfunction, and the FDA will require the patient to provide a signed copy of the package to the agency in October.
"We're making it very clear we're going to be giving out this information in the first week of September," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The suspension is effective immediately and will be implemented once the agency takes final action. The FDA will also consider patient requests for the drug.
"We're not going to wait for the agency to approve a new drug," said Dr. Steven Nissen, president of the American Urological Association.
"We've been working with the FDA for more than 20 years to try to find a better way to do this."
The FDA said the temporary suspension was designed to ensure the drug is effective, and it is expected to reduce the frequency and severity of adverse effects, which can affect sexual function.
The FDA has not determined if the temporary suspension is appropriate, but the agency is considering whether to recommend it.
"If it is appropriate, it will make the drug more effective in treating erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Frank Hevesi, director of the Center for Sexual Medicine at the University of Chicago and a specialist in sexual medicine.
Viagra was approved as a treatment for erectile dysfunction in 1998 and has been used for more than 15 years.
"It's important to keep in mind that these are very rare cases, and the agency will be working with the FDA on a more accurate basis to make sure that the drug is as effective as possible," said Hevesi. "We will have to follow the FDA's recommendations."
The temporary suspension is the temporary relief of symptoms that occur after a man has sex. The agency does not recommend it for use during pregnancy or in the second trimester. It is not expected that Viagra will become available until September.
Viagra has not been approved for use by anyone under the age of 18. The FDA does not recommend the use of the drug for recreational purposes or for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The FDA will work with the agency to review the scientific evidence and develop a more appropriate alternative drug for the condition, including Viagra.

A new treatment for that can work within 10 minutes has launched in the UK.
It is a gel called Eroxon, and has been clinically proven to work for people with mild to severe erectile dysfunction.
Eroxon is made by Futura Medical, a pharmaceutical company based in the UK.
Eroxon is applied to the head of the penis, where the gel evaporates, with this evaporation stimulates vascular and neural nerve endings by rapidly cooling and warming the area. This triggers the release of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, therefore increasing blood flow to the penis and causing an erection.
The release of nitric oxide is also how other erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments such as Viagra work, but they have the disadvantage of relaxing blood vessels in the entire body, since they are taken orally and not applied directly. This can lead to side effects such as nausea, dizziness and headaches.
These side effects mean people with pre-existing health conditions, such as heart and liver disease, cannot take oral ED pills. They are also not safe for people who have recently had a stroke, and cannot be taken with some prescription medicines.

Dr Catherine Hood, a sexual health specialist, added: “When they were launched back in the 90s, PDE5i medicines were a game-changer, but they are not an option for many men due to pre-existing health conditions, interactions with their prescription medicines or simply because of the time they take to work.”
In a 12-week clinical trial of 250 people, two out of three reported a significant improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. The figure rose to 80 per cent for those with severe erectile dysfuncion.
The gel is available over the counter, without a prescription. Eroxon costs £24.99 for a pack of four single-use tubes, and is available from Boots stores and online.
